Zeolites trap calcium and magnesium ions and instead release sodium ions, making the water softer but richer in sodium.

Studies have said that natural clinoptilolite zeolite is selective for these cations, meaning it will absorb and bind them in its honeycomb structure, even in the presence of large amounts of competing cations.
